Control Room

What stands out first about Control Room is the confidence with which Jehane Noujaim establishes its documentary identity. Rather than relying on premise alone, Control Room asks Samir Khader and Josh Rushing to supply personality from the opening stretch. The premise of Control Room is established with useful clarity: A documentary on perception of the United States's war with Iraq, with an emphasis on Al Jazeera's coverage. That direct approach lets Control Room use its 1h 24m running time for character, atmosphere and consequence.

The directorial personality of Control Room comes from Jehane Noujaim remaining assured without becoming rigid when the premise invites excess. Within Control Room, Jehane Noujaim repeatedly favours readable choices over attention seeking flourishes. That discipline explains why its polish rarely hides the personality underneath in Control Room rather than appearing only in isolated scenes. Where Control Room becomes less convincing, one or two themes receive more explanation than they need, and the loss of control is noticeable without becoming fatal.

Performance is the clearest human asset in Control Room, beginning with the committed centre provided by Samir Khader. Josh Rushing keeps Control Room from settling into one emotional register by approaching the material from another angle. The presence of George W. Bush gives the surrounding world of Control Room additional texture without distracting from the main line. When Jehane Noujaim holds on a reaction, Control Room communicates more efficiently than another explanatory exchange could manage.

Control Room finds its clearest story engine when United States comes into conflict with Iraq. That engine gives Samir Khader something concrete to pursue and protects Control Room from empty movement. In the hands of Julia Bacha, Al Jazeera becomes a useful complication rather than a detached twist within Control Room. The final use of the central character is familiar, but Control Room has already established enough context for the turn to matter.

What Control Room has to say is rooted in the tension between public stories and private experience. The experience of Samir Khader carries that question through Control Room without reducing the character to an example. The central character helps Control Room test the theme through consequence instead of explanation. When Jehane Noujaim allows ambiguity to remain, Control Room becomes more involving than a simple statement of intent.

A close look at Control Room reveals how clear editorial organisation carries information that the dialogue wisely leaves alone. Under the production banner of Noujaim Films, Control Room treats clear editorial organisation as part of its storytelling grammar. Patient observation gives Control Room a stronger sense of place within its United States context. The technical departments of Control Room remain coordinated, so polish supports involvement instead of creating distance.

Taken as a whole, Control Room is an easy recommendation for viewers who enjoy thoughtful factual storytelling. Control Room leaves its strongest impression through clear editorial organisation, the work of Samir Khader and a clear understanding of tone. The limitations around how one or two themes receive more explanation than they need should be acknowledged, but they do not erase what Control Room does well. I would return to Control Room for its personality and its willingness to connect genre pleasure with recognisable feeling.
