Gomorrah

What stands out first about Gomorrah is the confidence with which Matteo Garrone establishes its crime drama identity. Rather than relying on premise alone, Gomorrah asks Gianfelice Imparato and Salvatore Abbruzzese to supply personality from the opening stretch. The premise of Gomorrah is established with useful clarity: Scampia Vele is the Corbusian architecture which has become a stronghold for Mafia of Naples, Italy. That direct approach lets Gomorrah use its 2h 17m running time for character, atmosphere and consequence.

What keeps Gomorrah emotionally readable is Gianfelice Imparato, whose choices establish a consistent point of view. In scenes with Salvatore Abbruzzese, Gomorrah gains tension from two performers refusing to produce the same kind of energy. Toni Servillo contributes a separate rhythm to Gomorrah and helps the supporting material feel less purely functional. The direction by Matteo Garrone gives the cast of Gomorrah room to connect the quieter beats with the larger ones.

The plot of Gomorrah is built around the uneasy relationship between Scampia Vele and Corbusian. For Gianfelice Imparato, that relationship gives Gomorrah an emotional objective stronger than simple forward motion. The screenplay associated with Roberto Saviano lets Mafia of Naples reshape the direction of Gomorrah in stages. Although the treatment of Italy could be sharper, Gomorrah never entirely loses the thread established at the beginning.

The craft of Gomorrah is defined by shadowed spaces, supported by shadowed spaces rather than overwhelmed by decoration. Fandango gives Gomorrah a production framework in which a pace shaped by consequence can remain connected to story. Made from a Italy production context, Gomorrah uses setting and design to clarify mood before dialogue has to explain it. The technical finish of Gomorrah works because image, sound and editing appear to be serving the same immediate purpose.

Gomorrah finds additional purpose in its examination of loyalty, ambition and the damage caused by an apparently small compromise. Through the performance of Gianfelice Imparato, Gomorrah makes that examination feel personal before it becomes broadly symbolic. The idea of Scampia Vele repeatedly returns Gomorrah to the cost behind its more visible developments. Matteo Garrone is most persuasive when Gomorrah allows the theme to emerge from an uncomfortable choice rather than polished dialogue.

Matteo Garrone gives Gomorrah a directorial line that is controlled while retaining warmth from its opening promise to its final movement. The staging of Gomorrah is strongest when Matteo Garrone allows motivation to determine pace instead of reversing that priority. Viewed as a complete piece, Gomorrah confirms that the strengths comfortably outweigh the small reservations across most of the running time. A tighter version of Gomorrah would address how a middle passage could be slightly leaner, yet the surrounding work remains persuasive.

Gomorrah ends as one of the stronger examples of its form, especially for crime drama viewers interested in difficult choices and damaged trust. What remains from Gomorrah is the relationship between Gianfelice Imparato, shadowed spaces and Matteo Garrone's control of mood. The weakness that a middle passage could be slightly leaner narrows the impact of Gomorrah without cancelling its better work. On balance, Gomorrah gives its intended viewers a distinctive experience rather than a completely anonymous piece of content.
