Guidance

A spoiler light review of Guidance should begin with tone, because Pat Mills understands exactly how this comedy ought to feel. Guidance gains early credibility from Pat Mills, whose presence is balanced by the different rhythm of Zahra Bentham. The foundation of Guidance can be stated simply: Fabricating credentials to score a last ditch job as a high school guidance counsellor, a boozing, drug addled former child star becomes an improbable hit with his students by dispensing the worst advice possible. Within its 1h 21m running time, Guidance reveals both the benefits and the limits of that disciplined approach.

The most useful technical choice in Guidance is well judged reactions, because it helps the audience understand both space and mood. Edyson Entertainment frames Guidance through well judged reactions without letting surface finish replace character. Drawing on its Canada background, Guidance uses performer rhythm to give familiar material a more specific texture. Cinematography, sound and editing meet effectively in Guidance whenever a sequence must feel large without losing its human scale.

Guidance finds additional purpose in its examination of embarrassment, status and the gap between confidence and reality. Through the performance of Pat Mills, Guidance makes that examination feel personal before it becomes broadly symbolic. The idea of Fabricating repeatedly returns Guidance to the cost behind its more visible developments. Pat Mills is most persuasive when Guidance allows the theme to emerge from an uncomfortable choice rather than polished dialogue.

Pat Mills shapes Guidance with an approach that feels engaging in bursts but unable to maintain the same control. The best directed passages in Guidance establish an objective, let the characters respond and then allow the pressure to change naturally. Worthwhile ideas compete with an uneven structure in Guidance, particularly when Pat Mills resists the urge to underline an already clear emotion. My main reservation about Guidance is that the pace alternates between hurry and drift, a limitation that interrupts rather than defines the experience.

What keeps Guidance emotionally readable is Pat Mills, whose choices establish a consistent point of view. In scenes with Zahra Bentham, Guidance gains tension from two performers refusing to produce the same kind of energy. Kevin Hanchard contributes a separate rhythm to Guidance and helps the supporting material feel less purely functional. The direction by Pat Mills gives the cast of Guidance room to connect the quieter beats with the larger ones.

The plot of Guidance is built around the uneasy relationship between Fabricating and the central character. For Pat Mills, that relationship gives Guidance an emotional objective stronger than simple forward motion. The screenplay associated with Pat Mills lets an important relationship reshape the direction of Guidance in stages. Although the treatment of a difficult choice could be sharper, Guidance never entirely loses the thread established at the beginning.

Guidance ends as a qualified recommendation, especially for comedy fans who respond to personality and timing. What remains from Guidance is the relationship between Pat Mills, well judged reactions and Pat Mills's control of mood. The weakness that the pace alternates between hurry and drift narrows the impact of Guidance without cancelling its better work. On balance, Guidance gives its intended viewers a distinctive experience rather than a completely anonymous piece of content.
