Hey Ram

Hey Ram begins with an appealing promise: Kamal Haasan will treat its crime drama framework as a route into character rather than an excuse for noise. The early chemistry between Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan gives Hey Ram an immediate pulse. The story of Hey Ram begins from a specific pressure point: Saketh Ram's wife is raped and killed during direct action day riots in Calcutta. By the end of its 3h 6m running time, the value of Hey Ram rests less on novelty than on the care of its execution.
The craft of Hey Ram is defined by shadowed spaces, supported by shadowed spaces rather than overwhelmed by decoration. Raajkamal Films International gives Hey Ram a production framework in which a pace shaped by consequence can remain connected to story. Made from a India production context, Hey Ram uses setting and design to clarify mood before dialogue has to explain it. The technical finish of Hey Ram works because image, sound and editing appear to be serving the same immediate purpose.
At story level, Hey Ram turns Saketh Ram and Calcutta into the source of its main tension. The role played by Kamal Haasan becomes the viewer's route through Hey Ram, especially when Mahatma Gandhi begins to alter the situation. H. Banerjee gives Hey Ram momentum by allowing choices to create consequences instead of treating each scene as isolated information. Even when the central character pushes the plot toward familiar ground, Hey Ram remains attentive to what that pressure means for its characters.
Hey Ram relies heavily on Kamal Haasan, and the performance responds with enough specificity to carry changes in mood. The contribution of Shah Rukh Khan gives Hey Ram a useful counterweight instead of merely echoing the lead. Rani Mukerji makes the smaller exchanges in Hey Ram count, often through timing rather than emphatic dialogue. Kamal Haasan understands that Hey Ram becomes more persuasive when the cast can imply feelings before the script names them.
Kamal Haasan shapes Hey Ram with an approach that feels controlled while retaining warmth. The best directed passages in Hey Ram establish an objective, let the characters respond and then allow the pressure to change naturally. The strengths comfortably outweigh the small reservations in Hey Ram, particularly when Kamal Haasan resists the urge to underline an already clear emotion. My main reservation about Hey Ram is that a middle passage could be slightly leaner, a limitation that interrupts rather than defines the experience.
Beneath its plot, Hey Ram is most interested in loyalty, ambition and the damage caused by an apparently small compromise. That concern becomes visible through Kamal Haasan, whose choices allow Hey Ram to explore an idea without stopping for a speech. Saketh Ram gives the themes of Hey Ram a concrete dramatic form rather than leaving them abstract. The emotional value of Hey Ram grows whenever Kamal Haasan trusts the audience to connect behaviour with the larger question.
My final view is that Hey Ram provides one of the stronger examples of its form for crime drama viewers interested in difficult choices and damaged trust. Kamal Haasan supplies the emotional memory of Hey Ram, while Kamal Haasan keeps the genre machinery readable. A concern remains because a middle passage could be slightly leaner across part of Hey Ram, yet the better passages retain their force. What earns Hey Ram consideration is not perfection but the presence of choices that feel made for this story.
