Isabel Davis to Lead BFI National Lottery Filmmaking Funds

The BFI has announced the appointment of Isabel Davis as the new Director of its National Lottery Filmmaking Funds, placing one of the UK's most experienced screen leaders at the heart of independent British filmmaking.

Joining from Screen Scotland, where she has served as Executive Director for the past eight years, Davis will take up the role in October 2026 on a five year contract. She will oversee around £20 million of National Lottery funding each year while leading the BFI's wider strategy to strengthen and support the UK's independent film sector.

During her time at Screen Scotland, Davis played a key role in transforming the country's screen industry, securing additional funding and championing home grown filmmaking talent. She now steps into the role at a pivotal moment, as the independent film industry continues to navigate economic challenges while responding to growing audience demand for original stories and the cinema experience.

Speaking about her appointment, Davis said she was honoured to take on the position, describing public funding as vital to the future of UK film. She also highlighted the importance of supporting ambitious filmmakers whose work connects with audiences across the country.

BFI Chief Executive Ben Roberts praised Davis for her commitment to independent film, calling her a passionate leader with a strong national and international outlook. He added that her experience and determination make her the ideal person to guide the BFI's filmmaking funds into their next chapter.

Davis succeeds Mia Bays, who has led the fund since 2021 and oversaw a successful period that included BAFTA winning films and the launch of the BFI's long term Screen Culture 2033 strategy. Her appointment marks another significant step in shaping the future of British independent cinema.
