Life, Above All

Life, Above All begins with an appealing promise: Oliver Schmitz will treat its drama framework as a route into character rather than an excuse for noise. The early chemistry between Khomotso Manyaka and Keaobaka Makanyane gives Life, Above All an immediate pulse. The story of Life, Above All begins from a specific pressure point: A touching mother daughter relationship that reflects the modern South Africa. By the end of its 1h 40m running time, the value of Life, Above All rests less on novelty than on the care of its execution.

Oliver Schmitz gives Life, Above All a directorial line that is careful about tone and generally effective from its opening promise to its final movement. The staging of Life, Above All is strongest when Oliver Schmitz allows motivation to determine pace instead of reversing that priority. Viewed as a complete piece, Life, Above All confirms that the film delivers more often than it misses across most of the running time. A tighter version of Life, Above All would address how the middle loses a little urgency, yet the surrounding work remains persuasive.

Life, Above All finds additional purpose in its examination of communication, responsibility and the small choices that reshape relationships. Through the performance of Khomotso Manyaka, Life, Above All makes that examination feel personal before it becomes broadly symbolic. The idea of South Africa repeatedly returns Life, Above All to the cost behind its more visible developments. Oliver Schmitz is most persuasive when Life, Above All allows the theme to emerge from an uncomfortable choice rather than polished dialogue.

The craft of Life, Above All is defined by close attention to expression, supported by close attention to expression rather than overwhelmed by decoration. Dreamer Joint Venture Filmproduction gives Life, Above All a production framework in which music that leaves room for silence can remain connected to story. Made from a South Africa production context, Life, Above All uses setting and design to clarify mood before dialogue has to explain it. The technical finish of Life, Above All works because image, sound and editing appear to be serving the same immediate purpose.

The plot of Life, Above All is built around the uneasy relationship between South Africa and the central character. For Khomotso Manyaka, that relationship gives Life, Above All an emotional objective stronger than simple forward motion. The screenplay associated with Dennis Foon lets an important relationship reshape the direction of Life, Above All in stages. Although the treatment of a difficult choice could be sharper, Life, Above All never entirely loses the thread established at the beginning.

What keeps Life, Above All emotionally readable is Khomotso Manyaka, whose choices establish a consistent point of view. In scenes with Keaobaka Makanyane, Life, Above All gains tension from two performers refusing to produce the same kind of energy. Harriet Lenabe contributes a separate rhythm to Life, Above All and helps the supporting material feel less purely functional. The direction by Oliver Schmitz gives the cast of Life, Above All room to connect the quieter beats with the larger ones.

Taken as a whole, Life, Above All is a likeable film whose strengths survive its limitations for drama viewers who value performance and emotional detail. Life, Above All leaves its strongest impression through close attention to expression, the work of Khomotso Manyaka and a clear understanding of tone. The limitations around how the middle loses a little urgency should be acknowledged, but they do not erase what Life, Above All does well. I would return to Life, Above All for its personality and its willingness to connect genre pleasure with recognisable feeling.
