Little Black Book

Little Black Book arrives as a comedy directed by Nick Hurran, and its first strength is a clear sense of purpose. Brittany Murphy and Ron Livingston give Little Black Book a recognisable human centre before the larger mechanics take over. The central situation in Little Black Book comes into focus without a long explanation: A woman snoops through her boyfriend's palm pilot and reveals his former girlfriends, which causes her to question why they're still listed in his little black book. Across its 1h 47m running time, Nick Hurran keeps Little Black Book unable to turn workable ingredients into a stable rhythm.

Little Black Book finds additional purpose in its examination of embarrassment, status and the gap between confidence and reality. Through the performance of Brittany Murphy, Little Black Book makes that examination feel personal before it becomes broadly symbolic. The idea of the central character repeatedly returns Little Black Book to the cost behind its more visible developments. Nick Hurran is most persuasive when Little Black Book allows the theme to emerge from an uncomfortable choice rather than polished dialogue.

The plot of Little Black Book is built around the uneasy relationship between the central character and an important relationship. For Brittany Murphy, that relationship gives Little Black Book an emotional objective stronger than simple forward motion. The screenplay associated with Melissa Carter lets a difficult choice reshape the direction of Little Black Book in stages. Although the treatment of the wider conflict could be sharper, Little Black Book never entirely loses the thread established at the beginning.

The craft of Little Black Book is defined by comic timing built around character, supported by comic timing built around character rather than overwhelmed by decoration. Revolution Studios gives Little Black Book a production framework in which well judged reactions can remain connected to story. Made from a United States production context, Little Black Book uses setting and design to clarify mood before dialogue has to explain it. The technical finish of Little Black Book works because image, sound and editing appear to be serving the same immediate purpose.

Nick Hurran gives Little Black Book a directorial line that is unable to turn workable ingredients into a stable rhythm from its opening promise to its final movement. The staging of Little Black Book is strongest when Nick Hurran allows motivation to determine pace instead of reversing that priority. Viewed as a complete piece, Little Black Book confirms that the premise retains appeal even when the finished film struggles across most of the running time. A tighter version of Little Black Book would address how explanation repeatedly takes the place of discovery, yet the surrounding work remains persuasive.

What keeps Little Black Book emotionally readable is Brittany Murphy, whose choices establish a consistent point of view. In scenes with Ron Livingston, Little Black Book gains tension from two performers refusing to produce the same kind of energy. Holly Hunter contributes a separate rhythm to Little Black Book and helps the supporting material feel less purely functional. The direction by Nick Hurran gives the cast of Little Black Book room to connect the quieter beats with the larger ones.

Taken as a whole, Little Black Book is a missed opportunity rather than a complete failure for comedy fans who respond to personality and timing. Little Black Book leaves its strongest impression through comic timing built around character, the work of Brittany Murphy and a clear understanding of tone. The limitations around how explanation repeatedly takes the place of discovery should be acknowledged, but they do not erase what Little Black Book does well. I would return to Little Black Book for its personality and its willingness to connect genre pleasure with recognisable feeling.
