Melinda and Melinda

What stands out first about Melinda and Melinda is the confidence with which Woody Allen establishes its comedy identity. Rather than relying on premise alone, Melinda and Melinda asks Will Ferrell and Vinessa Shaw to supply personality from the opening stretch. The premise of Melinda and Melinda is established with useful clarity: Two alternating stories, one comedy and the other tragedy, about Melinda's attempts to straighten out her life. That direct approach lets Melinda and Melinda use its 1h 39m running time for character, atmosphere and consequence.

The central idea running through Melinda and Melinda concerns embarrassment, status and the gap between confidence and reality. Will Ferrell gives that idea a human scale, allowing Melinda and Melinda to remain accessible even when its world becomes larger. By returning to an important relationship, Melinda and Melinda turns theme into a source of pressure rather than a message waiting to be delivered. The handling by Woody Allen lets Melinda and Melinda leave a little interpretive room, which gives its better scenes an afterlife.

Melinda and Melinda benefits from Woody Allen being capable of strong moments without finding a complete rhythm about what each sequence needs to accomplish. Instead of making every beat equally loud, Woody Allen lets Melinda and Melinda create contrast between pressure and release. The appealing elements never quite settle into a seamless whole throughout Melinda and Melinda, with the strongest decisions feeling connected to character rather than display. It is still fair to say that Melinda and Melinda suffers because emotional turns sometimes arrive before the relationships are ready, but the problem remains contained.

The most useful technical choice in Melinda and Melinda is performer rhythm, because it helps the audience understand both space and mood. Fox Searchlight Pictures frames Melinda and Melinda through performer rhythm without letting surface finish replace character. Drawing on its United States background, Melinda and Melinda uses comic timing built around character to give familiar material a more specific texture. Cinematography, sound and editing meet effectively in Melinda and Melinda whenever a sequence must feel large without losing its human scale.

Melinda and Melinda is most involving when the screenplay allows Melinda to complicate what initially appears to be a story about the central character. That shift gives Will Ferrell a more specific problem to carry through Melinda and Melinda. Working from material credited to Woody Allen, Melinda and Melinda reveals an important relationship at a measured pace instead of rushing toward its largest turn. The later pressure around a difficult choice shows why Melinda and Melinda benefits whenever cause and consequence remain visibly connected.

Melinda and Melinda relies heavily on Will Ferrell, and the performance responds with enough specificity to carry changes in mood. The contribution of Vinessa Shaw gives Melinda and Melinda a useful counterweight instead of merely echoing the lead. Chiwetel Ejiofor makes the smaller exchanges in Melinda and Melinda count, often through timing rather than emphatic dialogue. Woody Allen understands that Melinda and Melinda becomes more persuasive when the cast can imply feelings before the script names them.

Taken as a whole, Melinda and Melinda is a mixed experience best approached with measured expectations for comedy fans who respond to personality and timing. Melinda and Melinda leaves its strongest impression through performer rhythm, the work of Will Ferrell and a clear understanding of tone. The limitations around how emotional turns sometimes arrive before the relationships are ready should be acknowledged, but they do not erase what Melinda and Melinda does well. I would return to Melinda and Melinda for its personality and its willingness to connect genre pleasure with recognisable feeling.
