Memoir of a Snail is a beautiful and emotional animated film about loneliness, family, and finding the strength to carry on when life becomes difficult. Although it is animated, this is not simply a film for children. It deals with some serious emotions and experiences in a surprisingly honest way.
The story follows Grace Pudel, a shy and lonely girl growing up in Australia. After losing her mother at a young age, Grace and her twin brother Gilbert are separated, leaving both of them to deal with life without the person they were closest to. Grace becomes fascinated by snails and collecting small objects, finding comfort in the things around her.
As Grace grows older, she experiences more loss and difficult moments. She often struggles to connect with other people and feels as though she does not quite belong. However, the story also introduces people who help her see that life can still contain kindness and friendship.
One of the things that makes Memoir of a Snail special is its stop motion animation. The characters and environments have a handmade feeling, which makes the film feel personal. The snail also becomes a meaningful symbol because it carries its home wherever it goes, just as Grace carries her memories and experiences with her.
The film can be sad at times, but it also has plenty of humour and warmth. It shows that even after experiencing painful things, it is possible to find people who make life better.
Memoir of a Snail is a reminder that life is not always easy or perfect. Sometimes, moving forward happens slowly. What matters is continuing to move, finding small moments of happiness, and remembering that you are not alone.
