MUBI has officially confirmed the UK and Ireland theatrical release date for The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford, the highly anticipated debut feature from writer-director Seán Robert Dunn. The dark comedy-drama, led by acclaimed Scottish actor Peter Mullan, will arrive in cinemas on 12 June 2026.

Set in rural Scotland, the film follows Kenneth McKay, a recently widowed tour guide who works at a small visitor centre dedicated to his alleged ancestor, Sir Douglas Weatherford, a respected Enlightenment figure. Kenneth’s quiet life is thrown into chaos when the fictional town of Arberloch becomes the filming location for a major fantasy television series, threatening the legacy he has spent years preserving.

As modern pop culture begins to overshadow local history, Kenneth becomes determined to protect Sir Douglas Weatherford’s reputation no matter the cost. The story blends dark humour with emotional depth, exploring themes of grief, identity, and cultural legacy through a distinctly British perspective.

The film recently celebrated its UK premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival following its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where it screened in the Big Screen Competition.

Alongside Peter Mullan, the cast includes Gayle Rankin, Jacob Oftebro, and Lewis MacDougall. The film also features cinematography by David Gallego and an original score by Gazelle Twin.

Produced by Ossian Pictures, Forensic Films, and The Fold, the project is supported by BBC Films, BFI, and Screen Scotland.

With strong festival buzz and a standout performance from Peter Mullan, The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing British film releases of summer 2026.
