Pinocchio

What stands out first about Pinocchio is the confidence with which Matteo Garrone establishes its fantasy identity. Rather than relying on premise alone, Pinocchio asks Federico Ielapi and Roberto Benigni to supply personality from the opening stretch. The premise of Pinocchio is established with useful clarity: Old woodcarver Geppetto's puppet creation, Pinocchio, magically comes to life with dreams of becoming a real boy. That direct approach lets Pinocchio use its 2h 5m running time for character, atmosphere and consequence.

The most useful technical choice in Pinocchio is magic with understandable rules, because it helps the audience understand both space and mood. Archimede frames Pinocchio through magic with understandable rules without letting surface finish replace character. Drawing on its Italy background, Pinocchio uses textured world building to give familiar material a more specific texture. Cinematography, sound and editing meet effectively in Pinocchio whenever a sequence must feel large without losing its human scale.

Pinocchio finds additional purpose in its examination of desire, belonging and the temptation to treat power as a shortcut around grief. Through the performance of Federico Ielapi, Pinocchio makes that examination feel personal before it becomes broadly symbolic. The idea of Old repeatedly returns Pinocchio to the cost behind its more visible developments. Matteo Garrone is most persuasive when Pinocchio allows the theme to emerge from an uncomfortable choice rather than polished dialogue.

Matteo Garrone shapes Pinocchio with an approach that feels engaging in bursts but unable to maintain the same control. The best directed passages in Pinocchio establish an objective, let the characters respond and then allow the pressure to change naturally. Worthwhile ideas compete with an uneven structure in Pinocchio, particularly when Matteo Garrone resists the urge to underline an already clear emotion. My main reservation about Pinocchio is that the pace alternates between hurry and drift, a limitation that interrupts rather than defines the experience.

The plot of Pinocchio is built around the uneasy relationship between Old and Geppetto. For Federico Ielapi, that relationship gives Pinocchio an emotional objective stronger than simple forward motion. The screenplay associated with Carlo Collodi lets Pinocchio reshape the direction of Pinocchio in stages. Although the treatment of Easily could be sharper, Pinocchio never entirely loses the thread established at the beginning.

What keeps Pinocchio emotionally readable is Federico Ielapi, whose choices establish a consistent point of view. In scenes with Roberto Benigni, Pinocchio gains tension from two performers refusing to produce the same kind of energy. Rocco Papaleo contributes a separate rhythm to Pinocchio and helps the supporting material feel less purely functional. The direction by Matteo Garrone gives the cast of Pinocchio room to connect the quieter beats with the larger ones.

Pinocchio ends as a qualified recommendation, especially for fantasy viewers who enjoy invented worlds with a human centre. What remains from Pinocchio is the relationship between Federico Ielapi, magic with understandable rules and Matteo Garrone's control of mood. The weakness that the pace alternates between hurry and drift narrows the impact of Pinocchio without cancelling its better work. On balance, Pinocchio gives its intended viewers a distinctive experience rather than a completely anonymous piece of content.
