Snowboarder

There is a useful directness to Snowboarder, a crime drama shaped by Olias Barco with a firm understanding of its audience. In Snowboarder, Nicolas Duvauchelle provides the anchor while Grégoire Colin introduces a contrasting energy. Without revealing later complications, Snowboarder opens from this situation: A young snowboarder with talent but no ambition, is introduced to the profession by a professional and Machiavellian snowboarder. The resulting its 1h 50m running time feels most convincing whenever Snowboarder trusts behaviour more than explanation.

The craft of Snowboarder is defined by careful ensemble blocking, supported by careful ensemble blocking rather than overwhelmed by decoration. CAB Productions gives Snowboarder a production framework in which shadowed spaces can remain connected to story. Made from a France production context, Snowboarder uses setting and design to clarify mood before dialogue has to explain it. The technical finish of Snowboarder works because image, sound and editing appear to be serving the same immediate purpose.

Nicolas Duvauchelle gives Snowboarder its most dependable performance, finding a clear emotional intention beneath the plot. Opposite Nicolas Duvauchelle, Grégoire Colin brings Snowboarder a contrasting pace that prevents the central relationship from feeling flat. Juliette Goudot widens the ensemble of Snowboarder through reactions that suggest a life beyond the immediate scene. Olias Barco serves the cast of Snowboarder best when a look or pause is allowed to finish before the story moves on.

Snowboarder benefits from Olias Barco being more promising in concept than persuasive in execution about what each sequence needs to accomplish. Instead of making every beat equally loud, Olias Barco lets Snowboarder create contrast between pressure and release. Committed work cannot fully overcome the structural weakness throughout Snowboarder, with the strongest decisions feeling connected to character rather than display. It is still fair to say that Snowboarder suffers because relationships remain too thin for later consequences to carry weight, but the problem remains contained.

At story level, Snowboarder turns Machiavellian and the central character into the source of its main tension. The role played by Nicolas Duvauchelle becomes the viewer's route through Snowboarder, especially when an important relationship begins to alter the situation. Olias Barco gives Snowboarder momentum by allowing choices to create consequences instead of treating each scene as isolated information. Even when a difficult choice pushes the plot toward familiar ground, Snowboarder remains attentive to what that pressure means for its characters.

Beneath its plot, Snowboarder is most interested in loyalty, ambition and the damage caused by an apparently small compromise. That concern becomes visible through Nicolas Duvauchelle, whose choices allow Snowboarder to explore an idea without stopping for a speech. Machiavellian gives the themes of Snowboarder a concrete dramatic form rather than leaving them abstract. The emotional value of Snowboarder grows whenever Olias Barco trusts the audience to connect behaviour with the larger question.

The lasting judgement on Snowboarder is a difficult recommendation despite several capable contributions for crime drama viewers interested in difficult choices and damaged trust. Snowboarder earns that response through the focus of Nicolas Duvauchelle, the contribution of careful ensemble blocking and the direction of Olias Barco. It remains true that relationships remain too thin for later consequences to carry weight during Snowboarder, which keeps enthusiasm measured. Still, Snowboarder understands the experience it wants to create and communicates that intention with recognisable personality.
