The Grandmother

There is a useful directness to The Grandmother, a horror film shaped by Paco Plaza with a firm understanding of its audience. In The Grandmother, Almudena Amor provides the anchor while Vera Valdez introduces a contrasting energy. Without revealing later complications, The Grandmother opens from this situation: A Paris model must return to Madrid where her grandmother, who had brought her up, just had a stroke. The resulting its 1h 40m running time feels most convincing whenever The Grandmother trusts behaviour more than explanation.

Paco Plaza gives The Grandmother a directorial line that is engaging in bursts but unable to maintain the same control from its opening promise to its final movement. The staging of The Grandmother is strongest when Paco Plaza allows motivation to determine pace instead of reversing that priority. Viewed as a complete piece, The Grandmother confirms that worthwhile ideas compete with an uneven structure across most of the running time. A tighter version of The Grandmother would address how the pace alternates between hurry and drift, yet the surrounding work remains persuasive.

The plot of The Grandmother is built around the uneasy relationship between Paris and Madrid. For Almudena Amor, that relationship gives The Grandmother an emotional objective stronger than simple forward motion. The screenplay associated with Carlos Vermut lets the central character reshape the direction of The Grandmother in stages. Although the treatment of an important relationship could be sharper, The Grandmother never entirely loses the thread established at the beginning.

The craft of The Grandmother is defined by carefully rationed sound, supported by carefully rationed sound rather than overwhelmed by decoration. La Abuela Apache, A.I.E. gives The Grandmother a production framework in which uneasy framing can remain connected to story. Made from a Spain production context, The Grandmother uses setting and design to clarify mood before dialogue has to explain it. The technical finish of The Grandmother works because image, sound and editing appear to be serving the same immediate purpose.

What keeps The Grandmother emotionally readable is Almudena Amor, whose choices establish a consistent point of view. In scenes with Vera Valdez, The Grandmother gains tension from two performers refusing to produce the same kind of energy. Karina Kolokolchykova contributes a separate rhythm to The Grandmother and helps the supporting material feel less purely functional. The direction by Paco Plaza gives the cast of The Grandmother room to connect the quieter beats with the larger ones.

The Grandmother finds additional purpose in its examination of fear, isolation and the moment familiar spaces stop feeling safe. Through the performance of Almudena Amor, The Grandmother makes that examination feel personal before it becomes broadly symbolic. The idea of Paris repeatedly returns The Grandmother to the cost behind its more visible developments. Paco Plaza is most persuasive when The Grandmother allows the theme to emerge from an uncomfortable choice rather than polished dialogue.

The Grandmother ends as a qualified recommendation, especially for horror viewers who prefer atmosphere to constant shocks. What remains from The Grandmother is the relationship between Almudena Amor, carefully rationed sound and Paco Plaza's control of mood. The weakness that the pace alternates between hurry and drift narrows the impact of The Grandmother without cancelling its better work. On balance, The Grandmother gives its intended viewers a distinctive experience rather than a completely anonymous piece of content.
