The Love Scam: When Romance Is Not What It Seems

Love is supposed to make us feel happy, safe, and connected. Sadly, not everyone we meet online has good intentions. A love scam, also known as a romance scam, happens when someone pretends to be romantically interested in another person to gain their trust and eventually take their money or personal information.

These scams often begin in a simple way. You might meet someone through social media, a dating app, or a messaging platform. At first, they seem kind, caring, and interested in your life. They may message you every day and share personal stories to make you feel close to them. Before long, you may feel like you have found someone special.

The warning signs can be difficult to notice because scammers are good at creating emotional connections. They may avoid meeting you in person or make excuses when you suggest a video call. Eventually, they might tell you about a sudden emergency and ask you for money. They could claim they need help with medical bills, travel costs, or another unexpected problem.

The best way to protect yourself is to take things slowly. Never send money to someone you have only met online, even if their story sounds believable. Avoid sharing private or financial information and try to confirm that the person is really who they say they are.

Most importantly, remember that being caught in a love scam is nothing to be ashamed of. Anyone can be manipulated when emotions are involved. Trust your instincts, talk to someone you trust, and protect both your heart and your wallet.
