The Odyssey Makes Box Office History at BFI IMAX

Christopher Nolan has done it again. The Odyssey has officially become the biggest opening weekend film in BFI IMAX history, proving that audiences are still eager to experience cinema on the biggest screen possible.

Over its opening weekend, The Odyssey earned an incredible £219,867 from BFI IMAX's single screen, beating the previous record held by Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). It is another milestone for Nolan, whose Oppenheimer now sits in third place on the venue's all time opening weekend chart.

The success has not stopped there. More than 82,000 tickets have already been sold, generating over £2.1 million at the box office and making The Odyssey the third highest grossing film in BFI IMAX history. Demand has been so high that 173 consecutive IMAX 70mm screenings have sold out across eight weeks, with film fans travelling from as far as Singapore, Los Angeles and Toronto to experience the film in its intended format.

As the first feature ever shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, The Odyssey marks a major moment for large format filmmaking. BFI IMAX is one of only a handful of cinemas worldwide able to screen the film from a rare IMAX 70mm print, giving audiences the chance to see it exactly as Christopher Nolan envisioned.

The record breaking success follows an equally impressive presale campaign, with 28,000 tickets sold in just 24 hours. For cinema lovers, The Odyssey is not just another blockbuster. It is a reminder that some films are simply made to be experienced on the biggest screen, with an audience, exactly as the filmmaker intended.
