Wind Chill

There is a useful directness to Wind Chill, a horror film shaped by Gregory Jacobs with a firm understanding of its audience. In Wind Chill, Emily Blunt provides the anchor while Ashton Holmes introduces a contrasting energy. Without revealing later complications, Wind Chill opens from this situation: Two college students share a ride home for the holidays, but when they break down on a deserted stretch of road, they are preyed upon by the ghosts of people who have died there. The resulting its 1h 31m running time feels most convincing whenever Wind Chill trusts behaviour more than explanation.

Emily Blunt gives Wind Chill its most dependable performance, finding a clear emotional intention beneath the plot. Opposite Emily Blunt, Ashton Holmes brings Wind Chill a contrasting pace that prevents the central relationship from feeling flat. Martin Donovan widens the ensemble of Wind Chill through reactions that suggest a life beyond the immediate scene. Gregory Jacobs serves the cast of Wind Chill best when a look or pause is allowed to finish before the story moves on.

The craft of Wind Chill is defined by patiently built dread, supported by patiently built dread rather than overwhelmed by decoration. Blueprint Pictures gives Wind Chill a production framework in which carefully rationed sound can remain connected to story. Made from a United States production context, Wind Chill uses setting and design to clarify mood before dialogue has to explain it. The technical finish of Wind Chill works because image, sound and editing appear to be serving the same immediate purpose.

Wind Chill is most involving when the screenplay allows the central character to complicate what initially appears to be a story about an important relationship. That shift gives Emily Blunt a more specific problem to carry through Wind Chill. Working from material credited to Joe Gangemi, Wind Chill reveals a difficult choice at a measured pace instead of rushing toward its largest turn. The later pressure around the wider conflict shows why Wind Chill benefits whenever cause and consequence remain visibly connected.

Beneath its plot, Wind Chill is most interested in fear, isolation and the moment familiar spaces stop feeling safe. That concern becomes visible through Emily Blunt, whose choices allow Wind Chill to explore an idea without stopping for a speech. The central character gives the themes of Wind Chill a concrete dramatic form rather than leaving them abstract. The emotional value of Wind Chill grows whenever Gregory Jacobs trusts the audience to connect behaviour with the larger question.

Gregory Jacobs shapes Wind Chill with an approach that feels alive in individual scenes and uncertain between them. The best directed passages in Wind Chill establish an objective, let the characters respond and then allow the pressure to change naturally. The cast and craft keep the experience watchable in Wind Chill, particularly when Gregory Jacobs resists the urge to underline an already clear emotion. My main reservation about Wind Chill is that too many scenes explain effects the actors have already suggested, a limitation that interrupts rather than defines the experience.

For horror viewers who prefer atmosphere to constant shocks, Wind Chill is ultimately an uneven film with enough personality to remain interesting. Its most persuasive combination in Wind Chill brings Emily Blunt together with carefully rationed sound under the direction of Gregory Jacobs. The fact that too many scenes explain effects the actors have already suggested prevents Wind Chill from being entirely seamless. Even with that reservation, Wind Chill has a clear point of view and enough genuine feeling to justify the journey.
