Canterbury Cathedral to Host Sacred Resonance Exhibition Reimagining Religious Icons Through Contemporary Art

Canterbury Cathedral will showcase a striking new art exhibition this month as French artist Renaud Muraire brings modern interpretations of religious iconography to the historic Eastern Crypt.

Titled Sacred Resonance, the exhibition runs from 21 May to 7 September 2026 and features ten paintings that reimagine familiar biblical figures and stories through a contemporary lens.

Muraire’s works draw inspiration from traditional Orthodox Christian iconography, using bold block colours and visually striking compositions that echo classical religious art. However, the artist introduces a fresh twist by portraying biblical figures with modern hairstyles, contemporary fashion, and updated visual aesthetics, creating a unique fusion of ancient faith narratives and present-day culture.

Set within the atmospheric Eastern Crypt of Canterbury Cathedral, the exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience contemporary art within one of England’s most historic religious landmarks. The contrast between the centuries-old cathedral setting and Muraire’s modern artistic interpretations is expected to create a powerful visual experience.

The exhibition invites audiences to reflect on timeless Christian stories in a new and accessible way, bridging tradition and modern expression.

With its combination of spirituality, history, and contemporary creativity, Sacred Resonance is set to attract art lovers, tourists, and visitors exploring Canterbury this summer.
