Jessica Morgan Appointed as New Director of Tate

Tate has announced that respected British curator Jessica Morgan will become its new Director, taking up the role on 1 January 2027. Currently Director of the Dia Art Foundation in New York, Morgan will become the tenth person to lead the organisation, succeeding Maria Balshaw.

Morgan is no stranger to Tate. She previously spent more than a decade at the gallery, where she curated major exhibitions, oversaw Turbine Hall commissions and helped expand Tate's internationally recognised collection. Since moving to Dia Art Foundation in 2015, she has transformed the organisation through ambitious exhibitions, new artist commissions and significant investment in its sites and collections.

Her appointment comes at an exciting time for Tate, with Tate Liverpool preparing to reopen in 2027 following a major redevelopment. Morgan's extensive international experience and long standing relationship with Tate place her in a strong position to guide the organisation through its next chapter.

Throughout her career, Morgan has built a reputation as one of the leading figures in contemporary art. Alongside her work at Dia, she has curated major exhibitions around the world and served as artistic director of the Gwangju Biennale. She also sits on several international advisory boards, reflecting her influence across the global arts sector.

Speaking about her appointment, Morgan described it as "an immense privilege" and praised Tate as the world's leading institution for both British art and international modern and contemporary art. She said she looks forward to building on the gallery's achievements while continuing to put artists and audiences at the heart of its work.

Her arrival signals an exciting new era for one of the world's most celebrated cultural institutions.
